A Firefighter’s Thoughts: Knowing Your Way Home

“Follow Me” Luke 5:27

You arrive at a house fire where a frantic mother tells you that her baby is inside the back bedroom of the home.  After transmitting the initial size-up, and informing the responding units that this will be a rescue, the crew goes into action. The crew quickly advances into the home searching each room.

Suddenly the home suffers a partial collapse and they are left disoriented. Then you hear your officer calling you, flashing his light back and forth, telling you to “Follow Me” (Luke 5:27). Your officer has practiced the skill of staying oriented and knew the way out.

You don’t doubt, you believe and follow your officer to safety.

In the midst of our lives, we often become complacent and skip certain important critical steps. We often bank on our “seniority” to get us through.

Our lack of focus on maintaining our skills can contribute to our inability to handle the next emergency. This is when we become trapped, pinned down by the flames of life’s troubles and we cry out as if we were a probationary firefighter on our first day.

In our hearts, we all have felt a moment of calling to something more. We push it down,  fight against it, and then we are reminded by our desperate need for someone to guide us.

“For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

Think of a firefighter finding a lost victim in a burning building, dragging them to safety, and resuscitating them. God has reached through the darkness of our pain. His nail scarred hand is extended, his voice is calling you, but it is up to you to answer the call.

Call upon the name of Jesus and He will save you. He will lead you through the darkness to the safety of the Father’s arms.
