About FirefighterToolbox Podcast/ Internet Radio Show Episode #032

In this episode, we learn the 4 things we need to know about Autism as firefighters.  Autism is growing rapidly and 1 in 88 children are diagnosed with autism.  Firefighters are inflicting unknown pain unto these patients because of their lack of awareness.

Don’t be one of them.  Listen in to learn what you must know about people with autism and how to handle a call with an autistic child/adult.

About Capt. Thomas Buckley

Capt. Buckley has been a member of Foxborough Fire(MA) since 1990 and is also a member of Autism and Law Enforcement Education Coalition (ALEC) and has been delivering Autism Awareness for First Responders to Massachusetts and Rhode Island firefighters since 2004.

Capt. Buckley also has a personal connection to autism because his nephew is autistic. In 2009 Tom was assigned the role of Coordinator for the State of Rhode Island and has been delivering this program to first responders since then. ALEC and ALEC-RI are both supported by grants that enable us to deliver this important information to firefighters free of charge.

ALEC and ALEC-RI currently educates first responders across the State of Massachusetts and Rhode Island and will begin shortly branching out to all of the New England States, including New York, about Autism Spectrum Disorder and how to better understand a person who is on the spectrum. ALEC has trained over 17,000 first responders in Massachusetts and over 5000 in twenty-one additional States since its inception.
