About The Episode

In this episode, I interview Deputy Chief Stephen Kalman of the Hackensack Fire Dept and we discussed the Hackensack Ford fire that revolutionized the fire service.

We discussed what it was like and what he did on the Ford fire. What lessons were learned and how the department has responded through the years since.

We also discussed what it takes to be a great firefighter and leader in the fire service.

How to deal with LODD and how to heal the wounds of a LODD.

This and more.

I was there too. buffed the fire after the initial collapse. Took lots of slides. My Bergenfield FD was called to assist, putting the camera down I went to work with my brother firefighters. There was a secondary collapse in the front show room. I came dam close to wearing the ceiling. Today it would be called a “Close Call” This part of the incident was caught on film be Ron Jeffers, NJMFPA. Unfortunately it took the lose of 5 brother’s to see changes in the City.

Thanks for sharing Robert. I would love to see the pictures if you still have them. Glad you made it out ok. It is unfortunate to lose 5 brothers in order to adapt and change. I hope and pray, we as the fire service don’t repeat history. There are very similar correlations from that era to this era we are in now. By sharing this and remembering the lessons learned hopefully, we as the fire service will proactively adapt and change to the new demands and challenges we face presently and going into the future.

29years on Career and have used that story and an old low quality VHS to get the message to hundreds of career and part time firefighters. Looking forward to listening to the interview.

This is a topic covered in the Firefighter 1 course held at Mortis County Fire Academy (NJ)
There is much truth in the statement “we alll. learn. from. tragedy .” God bless the families and. fellow firefighters of the Hackensack FD. . Never forgotten. Everyone Goes. Home.
